Besides having a whole slew of Banished Ingredients (I could do a novel length post about the ingredients I found when doing research for this post)
… they all use petroleum based ingredients.
🔺️Red Flags:
▪︎Petroleum
▪︎Liquid petroleum
▪︎Petrolatum
▪︎Paraffin
▪︎Paraffin oil
▪︎Mineral oil
▪︎White mineral oil
▪︎Petroleum derived colorants
What are these ingredients and why are they on the Banished Ingredient List?
Petroleum based ingredients are inexpensive and commonly found in lotions, creams, ointments, baby products, skincare and cosmetics. These types of products are commonly recommended for dry skin.
What breaks my heart is seeing doctors and dermatologists recommending these to parents for their babies. There are so many safe alternatives to these type of products that will actually nourish and hydrate the skin. Check the Masterlist for toxin free alternatives.
▶️ “A liquid mixture obtained from crude petroleum oil used as a skin moisturizer. It may contain various amounts of carcinogenic PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) and other petroleum contaminants, depending on the level to which it has been refined. There is consistent evidence that untreated or mildly-treated mineral oils cause cancer of the skin in humans.”
▶️ “A study published 2009 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology investigated whether mineral oil-based moisturizers might increase the rate at which tumors form. When mice that were at high risk of developing skin cancer received a topical application of 100 mg once a day, five days a week for 17 weeks, the rate of tumor formation significantly increased.”
Additionally, the issue with petroleum is that it creates an illusion that your skin is moisturized but it really just creates an airtight barrier on the skin, not allowing your skin to breathe and suffocates your pores. While you may feel temporary moisture, you’re actually drying out your pores by keeping air and moisture out.
Mineral oil is considered comedogenic, which means it can clog your pores and increase the risk of acne and blackheads.
It also enhances absorption, so all of the other toxic ingredients in these products are absorbed through your skin at a faster rate entering your blood stream, and then being distributed throughout your entire body. And if these companies use petroleum based ingredients, I can promise you they are using many other Banished Ingredients as well, so keep that in mind!
When I am helping women detox their skincare and makeup I hear complaints of clogged pores, black heads, bumps, breakouts and a combo of dry and oily skin. When I look at their current product labels there are usually many Banished Ingredients, but one specifically that I’ve been seeing in my recent detoxes is petroleum based ingredients.
Ladies, ditch the temporary fix. These ingredients aren’t doing anything good for your skin or body!
